Samuele

The castellan at the head of a garrison probably provided a good level of equipment: here is shown the best available in the second half of 1200.
Above a padded jacket (in French "gambison"), he wears a chainmail hauberk with integrated mittens to protect hands. The aventail, separated from the coat, is worn over a padded cuff. The legs are protected by metal greaves, which began to appear right at the end of the thirteenth century, and at the foot wears spurs indicating his way to fight while riding a horse. The helmet is a "pot helm" with typical design of the late thirteenth century. This type of helmet was used mainly by those who fought on the saddle, given the reduced visibility: in foot combat was preferred the use of open helmets. Over the hauberk is wearing a cloth surcoat with its own colors.
He is armed with a triangular shield, of leather covered wood, and with a long sword with a wide blade, ideal for fighting on horseback. Among the knightly weapon, there was also the spear, not shown here.

I guess that he would have to rely upon his horse to do most of the seeing.

You're right, but actually a horse is too expensive for its finances :XD:
